My family gets Groovy together by geocaching. Geocaching is a GPS/location based game/activity where people “hide” a container of varying sizes with a logbook and potentially some other goodies inside it, while noting and posting the GPS coordinates on a listing site like http://www.geocaching.com or opencaching.com. Geocaches can be extremely easy to find all the way up to requiring team mates and special equipment to reach and retrieve the cache. My 8 year old (JDToolman) and 6 year old (AGToolGirl) have both fallen in love with geocaching as it affords us time to be together, to talk, to experience sites and things we would otherwise miss and to have the thrill of finding a hidden “treasure”. Thus, the Tool Team Get’s Groovy by Geocaching.

The “grooviest” thing we do as a family (on a regular basis) is have Friday Movie night. We pop popcorn and get either a new release or an old favorite and watch a movie together. The most “groovy” part of our evening is the laughs and times we share watching a good show. đŸ™‚

Our family ‘gets groovy’ every other Saturday morning at the Lowe’s Build and Grow program. It’s great fun to see dad teaching our girls how to hammer and assemble fun wood projects.

We watch the New Zoo Revue (is there anything for small children that fits the term “groovy” more than that show?) while playing on our indoor playground and ball pit in our basement.

Something groovy our family does, is we drive for a while until we get to lots of woods. Then we unload our 4-wheelers and go about 8 miles way up in the mountains. We camp around moose and grizzly bears for a few days while we hunt for caribou. Alaska is such a beautiful part of God’s creation – everyone should do this with us! Last time we went it rained for 4 days – which wasn’t very groovy!

My family grooves many times in the evening. I’ll put on some “fast music,” as my 5 year-old daughter requests, and we’ll dance until we collapse in a heap. Great times!

We like to record the kids dancing to music on our digital camera and then put the memory card into our Wii and play it backwards. Hilarious!

When my dad goes on business trips he always trys to take my mom and us kids with him so that we can take a mini vacation when the meetings are done. My family always loves to spend time together rather then splitting up and doing our own things. We’re really close.

The “grooviest” thing we do together as a family…set-up and do church together on Sunday Morning. My husband and I work opposite shifts to keep our adopted 5 and 3 year old boys out of Day Care, so Sunday morning is one time we have together. I am the Children’s Pastor at my Church, so we go early as a family and set-up Children’s Church together (we rent a school library). I think it is groovy that my kids experience so young what it means to serve God in the church as they have fun and help (well…they mostly ride on the carts as we roll them in). I love that they can’t wait for Sunday; they start asking for church Monday night!

It was fun to read some of the things families do to stay ‘groovy’- many of which we enjoy also! Right now our favorite way to stay groovy is to cook together. Our kids enjoy each step- from making the grocery list, to going to the store, preparing and of course eating. It has helped with math skills, money management and picky eaters! Our girls keep track of the date they try things in their cookbooks and how it rates. When we can share what we make with friends, that’s even better!
